Benefits of Sedation Dentistry

Benefits of Sedation Dentistry

Sedation dentistry is a commonly used method that dentists employ to ease the anxiety of patients who are afraid of dentists and dental treatment. Sometimes, patients are so afraid of visiting the dentist that they fail to get the treatment they need, and then the problem gets much worse. A visit to the dentist becomes inevitable, and by that time, the treatment needed is far more costly than it would have been early on. Thanks to the benefits of sedation dentistry, no one has to fear dental treatment these days.

How Sedation Dentistry Works

Your dentist can offer you different types of sedation. Nitrous oxide is one type of sedation. You may have heard it referred to by the more common term, “laughing gas.” In fact, though, nitrous oxide will not make you laugh. The way in which you get the benefits of sedation dentistry from nitrous oxide is that you will simply feel extremely relaxed. You will still be able to communicate with your dentist, but chances are that once the dental treatment is finished, you may not even remember it.
Your dentist can also give you the benefits of sedation dentistry in the form of a pill that will relax you.

Another of the benefits of sedation dentistry is that if you have a disorder like Parkinson’s Disease or Cerebral Palsy that makes it difficult or impossible for you to control your movements, sedation dentistry can make you more relaxed so that your movements will be more easily controlled.

What About the Disadvantages?

Generally speaking, the benefits of sedation dentistry far outweigh the disadvantages. It is, however, not usually covered by dental insurers. Additionally, you will not be able to drive yourself home after your dental appointment – you will have to either take a taxi to and from the dentist office, or have a friend or family member bring you and take you home.
There are also people who are uncomfortable taking any kind of medication. It will be up to you to decide whether an aversion to medication trumps your fear of dental procedures.
